the farmer
hari happily turned down the offer from a big corporation who wanted to gobble-up his land for peanuts [well golden peanuts, to be honest]. he'd been promised double the loan for the upcoming crop season by opposition party for agitating. he wasn't really dumb like other farmers but he didn't know he was being duped.

today's papers were flashing headlines about tata threatening to pull out of singur. i personally don't favour nano or any other small car that would threaten to break the traffic sanity and add to already smog filled situation. i am not sure if the farmer is going to be benefited. i see 3 cons here:-
1. arable land shrinking
2. farmer going unemployed
3. further environmental imbalance
but i still think we should be going towards green surrounding not grey.

But I think that for development we need industrialisation, but we should give equal importance to agriculture , to green. and I think that Tatas are one of the most fair people, and according to the paper news, they have given best compensation, but the govt hasnt passed it on to the concerned people.
tomorrow somebodyelse will take up the land, and then they wont be getting even fair compensation.
Its all politics , nothing else, agitation is not for the benefit of poor farmers.
Arent the rising food price enough indication that we need to concentrate more on agri than on indutrialisation.
Thou the agitation is more of a political drama n i agree maybe tomoro sumone else wil gooble up the land,
but atleast in pretense, ther is an agitation for saving agri n farmers..i guess thats the max we can expect in this country..
I think good things are happening wrt governance of the benefit that should go to the farmers these days... not at the level that will be very obvious to everyone but there are a lot of ground level things happening for good...
Having said that, there is a need of ensuring the benefits of agriculture and associated people badly in our country... I hope things become better while we continue to suffer at the hands of a handful of politicians whose interest is above the rest of the things for obvious reasons...
Infact this Nano trend scares me...it's infectious.
As for the farmers, they might always remain to be the exploited ones.
renu - but as om said something is happening at the grassroot level. he has seen it i am sure
animated junk - future belong to capsules, so you really don't have to worry about the prices ;)
om - i guess something more needs to happen
sam - it scares me a lot...
nano issue is very difficult to solve. on one hand lies the fact that 1)it will generate more employment .......
2)more middle class would be able to afford the car
3) v can market the car globally n perhaps increase the export
the drawbacks are obvioulsy the ones u hav jotted down
when the concept of SEZ was put forward and it was always a delicate risk
agriculture is very imp but so is industrial revolution ........but this revolution should not stand and tower on poor farmer's stomach
the recent bandhs are not the answer for the dilemma
